Mary DeMello, DDS, Region 4 Trustee

Mary DeMello, DMD, Massachusetts Dental Society Region 4 Trustee. A graduate of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and recipient of the Academy of General Dentistry Award in dental school, Mary DeMello, DMD, has been a general dentist for 30 years in February. After completing a general practice residency at New England Medical Center, Dr. DeMello joined a fellow Tufts alum in his practice as an associate. Four years later, in 1993, she started her practice in Medfield, MA, with approximately 200 patients and space to grow. The practice has been open for decades, with all the operatories fully functional, many more patients, and an amazing team. Dr. Dayana Escobar, a prosthodontist, and Dr. Sarah Shih, a periodontist, joined the team respectively in 2017 and 2014.

In seventh grade, Dr. DeMello told her dad she wanted to be a dental hygienist. His response was, "Wouldn't you want to be your own boss?" That pivotal moment changed her mindset and was the catalyst for her becoming a dentist. An advocate of organized dentistry throughout her career, Dr. DeMello found that the networking and support aspects of belonging to a professional group were especially beneficial when starting her career. Dr. DeMello's connection with the Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS) began when a colleague asked her to join the Yankee Dental Congress committee. Now a Region 4 Trustee, Dr. DeMello believes in paying it forward by helping other young dentists get involved. She ran for a second term as Region 4 Trustee because the "Yes on 2" campaign proved that we could accomplish great things when we work together with a unified voice.

When not seeing patients, Dr. DeMello finds joy in running, biking, hiking, and yoga. When things are challenging, she finds exercise is the best medicine. She also enjoys traveling with her children. She shared, "Although they are older and we all have significant others, we have similar interests and simply enjoy each other's company. The time I spend with them and what I have learned from them is priceless."
