Brian McDowell, DMD, Region 2 Trustee

Brian McDowell, DDS, Massachusetts Dental Society Region 2 Trustee. This quote, “Everything you do is based on the choices you make.  It’s not your parents, past relationships, your job, the economy, the weather, an argument, or your age that is to blame. You and only you are responsible for every decision and choice you make,” has helped Dr. McDowell evaluate his goals and set a plan in motion to achieve those goals. A graduate of Ohio State University, Dr. McDowell has been practicing dentistry in Fitchburg, MA, since 1991. With a passion for TMJ and sleep dentistry, he has created a vision for his practice where patients with those ailments can seek treatment. 

One thing that surprised Dr. McDowell about the profession is how difficult it is to be a small business owner.  A piece of advice that has stuck with him while building his practice is, “Life is exactly the way you want it to be. If you wanted it to be different, it would be different.” It’s simple—instead of complaining, take action. This advice pushed him to decide what he really wanted and make a plan to get there. Being involved in the Massachusetts Dental Society has also always been part of that plan. As a student, Dr. McDowell got involved with the Society. For the past 30-plus years, he has been an active member of the Society, holding both state and local level positions. 

Friends describe him as driven, compassionate, and friendly. He finds that being in this profession definitely teaches humility. When not at his practice, Dr. McDowell can be found on the golf course, ski slope, or with his family. Although his kids are now adults, they still enjoy traveling and often vacation together. In his experience, the key to a well-balanced life is having strong family ties.
