SESSION 1: Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR for Healthcare Providers

This American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support CPR for Healthcare Providers renewal program reviews cardiopulmonary resuscitation, AED use, and choking emergencies in adults, children, and infants. This course includes a required written exam and skills assessment. Because this is a traditional lecture-style class lasting three (3) hours, there is no online component.

IMPORTANT: AHA CPR certificates are now issued as eCards; they will be emailed to you following successful completion of CPR training.

After successfully completing this course, attendees will be able to:
  • Identify and treat cardiac arrest in adults, children, and infants  
  • Operate an automated external defibrillator (AED) unit
  • Identify and manage choking incidents for adults, children, and infants

Miles Childs: is the Director of Critical Knowledge, a Boston-based healthcare consulting and training firm. He is a licensed paramedic, and is joined by a group of Fire, EMS & Nursing professionals to teach CPR at YDC.


SESSION 2: OSHA, Infection Control, Blood & Aerosol Borne Pathogens, and Barrier Precautions

This course is a mandate for dental healthcare providers and recommended for all office staff. The presentation encompasses guidelines from OSHA, ADA, the CDC on Workplace Safety, Infection Control, Blood and Aerosol Borne Pathogens and Barrier Precautions. Discussion includes written policies and protocols regarding On-Site Inspection Compliance for Massachusetts dental practices.

After successfully completing this course, attendees will be able to:
  • Distinguish areas and procedures of potential risk and injury in the workplace
  • Develop strategies and utilize protective measures to reduce the risk of injury and disease transmission in accordance with OSHA and CDC guidelines
  • Design and implement policies and procedures required for employees to follow regarding Exposure and Post Exposure Control Plans for their practice
  • Demonstrate the proper selection and use of personal protective equipment 


Cathie Collier

Cathie Collier, RDH: holds a bachelor’s degree in Dental Hygiene Education from the Fones School of Dental Hygiene, where she serves as adjust faculty and has served as clinical coordinator. She has her master’s degree from the Graduate Institute in Integrative Health and Healing. A national lecturer, key opinion leader, and published author, she has presented to Dental Associations, Dental Hygiene Associations, and numerous Study Clubs. Her presentations include Occupational Health and Safety, Infection Control, HIPPA Regulations, CPR and Medical Emergencies. Her company, A Healthy Education, is a recognized CERP provider. As a member of the Organization for Safety and Asepsis Prevention, she has assisted numerous dental offices throughout New England to achieve compliance and meet infection control regulations from the ADA to CDC. She serves as Faculty for Yale New Haven Hospital Center for EMS and is currently on the continuing education development committee for the American Heart Association.


SESSION 3: Pharmacologic Management of Acute Dental Pain and the Prescription Opioid Epidemic

Proper implementation of prescription writing skills is a critical aspect of patient care in today's climate of opioid abuse and enhanced prescribing regulations. The attendee will learn about the history of pain management and dentistry's responsibility in combating the prescription drug epidemic. The basics of choosing proper analgesics are reviewed so that the attendee will understand the standards of care as they pertain to pain management. The principles of oral dosing regimens will be presented along with side effects, contraindications and clinically significant drug-drug interactions.  

After successfully completing this course, attendees will be able to:
  • Review analgesic prescribing guidelines in connection with the effective management of acute dental pain
  • Discuss the origin of the prescription opioid epidemic and dentistry’s role in promoting responsible opioid prescribing
  • Explain how to counsel patients about the side effects, security, addictive nature and proper storage and disposal of controlled substances
  • Determine the legal and ethical issues of prescribing appropriate quantities of controlled substances
  • Understand the basic pharmacology and side effects of opioid and non-opioid analgesics


Richard Harold

Richard Harold, DMD, JD: served as a Full Professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston prior to becoming a dental-legal consultant, expert witness, author and national speaker. Dr. Harold received his DMD degree from Tufts University, his JD from New England School of Law and his BS in pharmacy from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy.  Prior to joining the faculty at Tufts University, Dr. Harold owned and operated a general dentistry practice. Dr. Harold served as a consultant to the American Dental Association Council on Dental Practice during 2018-19 and participated in an initiative to develop a comprehensive resource on dental practice risk management.  The work product of the initiative serves as the basis for the ADA Guidelines for Practice Success module on Managing Risk and is available online at ADA.org/gps
