Effective pain management is a critical component of dental practice, requiring clinicians to balance patient comfort with safe prescribing practices. This course will review evidence-based strategies for managing dental pain while addressing the risks of opioid misuse, abuse, and addiction. Participants will learn how to identify patients at increased risk for substance use disorders, counsel patients on medication side effects and safe use, and determine appropriate prescription quantities for higher-risk medications. The program will also cover opioid antagonists, overdose-prevention approaches, and when dentists should educate patients about accessing these lifesaving resources.
