Learn About the MDS

Our History

Founded in 1864, the Society was incorporated in 1865, at which point it officially became known as the Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS). Dr. Ira Salmon served as the first leader. At the first annual meeting in May 1864, Dr. Nathan C. Keep was elected president. Since then, more than 100 dentists have followed in his footsteps, serving in the organization’s highest role. Over the past 160+ years, the organization has supported the professional pathways of thousands of dentists and continues to do so.

Current Day

The Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS) is a constituent of the American Dental Association (ADA), with over 5,000 members. The organization is dedicated to the professional development of its member dentists through initiatives in education, advocacy, and the promotion of the highest professional standards. The Society also champions oral health initiatives for residents in the Commonwealth. The annual Yankee Dental Congress, a premier dental meeting held annually in Boston, is also presented by the MDS.
