Call for Nominations

The Metropolitan District Dental Society is calling for nominations for the annual Robert L. Burke, DDS Memorial Volunteer Award for 2016-2017. This recognition award was established in 1999 in Dr. Burke’s honor to recognize outstanding volunteer efforts and contributions which have been put forth for the betterment of the dental society. The award is presented annually at a formal district dinner meeting. This year the 2015 recipient, Dr. Mary DeMello, will be honored at the Wellesley Country Club on Tuesday September 27th.  Please contact if you would like further information on the MDDS Dinner Meeting Honoring Dr. DeMello.

The award is given to a dental society member who is in good standing of the Massachusetts Dental Society, who has bettered the community within the Metropolitan District. Nominations will be accepted from the membership and submitted to the district office and then forwarded to the MDDS Awards Committee. So that the MDDS Awards Committee can properly evaluate each nomination, nominations must be submitted in writing explaining why the nominated individual deserves the award. The MDDS Awards Committee is comprised of four members of the MDDS Executive Committee. The Chair of the district, Dr. Maryam Shomali, is the Chair of the MDDS Awards Committee. She will choose three people to be on the committee from the Executive Board. The Chair only votes in the case of a tie.

Dental Speed Networking Works!

This past Sunday, August 21st, the Middlesex and Metropolitan District Dental Societies held the initial Dental Rounds Speed Networking Event with dentists from all over Massachusetts! Food, drink and fun were in attendance in the private Back Room at The Burren Restaurant in Somerville's chic Davis Square. Generously sponsored by Carestream’s Paul Abreu, and organized by Drs. Rosie Wagner, Maryam Shomali and Patricia Machalinski, the afternoon affair was a tremendous success.

Doors opened at 2:30 p.m. and speed networking begun at 3:00 p.m. sharp. There were 20 tables set up and the person sitting on the east side of the room moved to the next table after 8 minutes of meeting with the dentist sitting facing the west side of the room. Young and experienced, specialists and general dentists, district officers and those new to the society all exchanged email addresses and phone numbers and learned something new about a fellow dentist.
