Leadership Institute

The Massachusetts Dental Society Leadership Institute provides the tools and insight needed to improve your leadership effectiveness and help you respond to a rapidly shifting landscape. It is designed for those who want to think strategically about emerging institutional and informational needs, changing expectations, new technologies, and long-range plans. The curriculum will deepen your insights and broaden your repertoire of useful approaches to leadership. The program also provides a valuable opportunity to assess your own leadership strengths and weaknesses in a supportive and engaging learning environment.

  • Improve communication skills, expand conflict resolution and negotiating techniques, sharpen problem-solving skills, and exchange ideas.
  • Learn how you can contribute to the success of your association.

  • Improve your delegation skills and build a team confidence and trust when you are in--and out of--the office.
  • Bolster knowledge, skills, and attitudes about oral health advocacy.

Participant Benefit

Through participation in the program, you will learn and grow your ability to lead. To help off-set your costs of participation, a stipend of $500 will be provided upon completion of the program. (Note: Attendance at all meetings is required to receive the stipend.)

Participant Requirements

Participants are required to attend four half-day meetings and a team-building event during the first year of the program.

Upon completion of the first year, participants serve on a special Ad Hoc Committee, where you will have the opportunity to work on an issue affecting the profession. There will be a kick-off meeting held at the MDS Headquarters in Southborough.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Leadership Institute, dentists must be committed to the program and must have a strong interest in developing leadership skills. Candidates can be self-nominated or nominated by another member. Nominees must be current MDS members.
 

Each candidate must submit the following:

1. Completed Leadership Institute application, with current CV
2. A paragraph explaining what they hope to gain from the Institute
3. A listing of any significant contribution to the professional community and/or organized dentistry
4. Two references (optional)
 

Selection Process

The Council on Membership will review and select MDS Leadership Institute participants.

Selected candidates will be contacted by June 30, 2016.

The program will commence on September 14, 2016.
 

Application deadline: May 31, 2016.
