May - Question of the Month

At the beginning of each month, the MDS President will post a new question of the month. We would like to know our members' thoughts on these issues and will share them on this page. The MDS reserves the right to post only the comments that we deem appropriate.

What has been the most important issue facing the MDS over the past 12 months, and what do you think is the most important issue moving forward?

Responses to May's Question of the Month

"The most important issue now and going forward is "non-covered services." Delta of MA is still aiming for January 1 to implement this cap on fees for services they don't cover. If they succeed, the floodgates will open."—MDS Member, South Shore District

"My feeling is that the new health care law and its implications for dentistry are most critical for the MDS to observe and regulate if possible, for now and ongoing."—Retired MDS Member, North Metropolitan District

"Adult dental coverage for MassHealth recipients is at extreme risk. If the Senate does not save it by restoring it to the state budget, we will lose a lot of ground in dental public health. This is a repeat of the experiment we lived through from 2002—2006. Everyone, please call your state senator and ask to keep adult dental coverage for MassHealth in the budget. If that does not work, be prepared to pressure our legislators to restore coverage this summer."—MDS Member, East Middlesex District
