A recent amendment to the “Controlled Substances Act”, M. G. L. c. 94c § 18(e), requires that dentists who prescribe controlled substances must take a course in pain management to fulfill their licensing requirements by March 31, 2012. The Middlesex District has added this class to the district calendar to help meet this requirement:

This presentation will cover the use of controlled substances for pain management in the practice of dentistry. An evidence-based review and update on dental pain, and the current issues and controversies regarding controlled substances will be covered. Dentists will review effective pain management strategies, as well as clinical relevance and application of pain control in dental practice, with special consideration of the identification and intervention of narcotic opioid abusive dental patients.
In this course, you will: - Learn clinical application of pain management in dental practice - Discuss etiology and pathophysiology of acute and chronic odontogenic pain and the strategies, methods, and medications of pain management and analgesic therapy - Discover risk management considerations for both the dental patient and the members of the dental health team - Review current issues, controversies, and challenges in dental patient pain management
About the Speaker:
Paul J. Vankevich, DMD, is a 1981 graduate of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and a retired Dental Officer of the U.S. Navy Dental Corps. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine and a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Vankevich is an Assistant Clinical Professor and a Course Director at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.
